Carrie Underwood sang “America the Beautiful” at Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday, performing it a cappella after a technical problem with the music being played could not be resolved.
The eight-time Grammy winner, the first among musical artists announced before inauguration weekend, was introduced after Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States and delivered a speech.
There was about a two-minute break after Underwood’s presentation, with the singers standing on the stage, facing Trump and Vice President JD Vance, waiting for his music to begin. Finally, after a whisper in an usher’s ear, Underwood told the crowd in the U.S. Capitol rotunda, “You know the words, help me here,” and she began.

The inauguration ceremony was moved from its traditional setting on the Capitol steps to the interior on Friday, amid predictions of an Arctic explosion. Temperatures were around 20 degrees outside today, while according to Trump, it was a constant 72 degrees in the Rotunda.
Underwood rattled off the names of those chosen to perform throughout the weekend of activities surrounding the inauguration. Tenor Christopher Macchio sang the national anthem during Monday’s inauguration ceremony, which also included performances by the Armed Forces Choir and the U.S. Naval Academy Glee Club.
Lee Greenwood attended Trump’s Make America Great Again victory rally on Sunday, joined by Kid Rock, the Village People, Billy Ray Cyrus and Liberty University’s Praise Choir. Tonight, the Village People, Jason Aldean and a “surprise musical guest” will perform at the Liberty Ball, one of three official balls on inauguration night. Rascal Flatts and Parker McCollum are scheduled to perform at the Commander in Chief Ball, while Gavin DeGraw will perform at the Starlight Ball.
