Carlos Alcaraz Mounted an extraordinary return to win the male final at Roland Garros on Sunday, beating the world number 1 Jannik sinner 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2).
In the last final in the history of the tournament, the Spaniard has demonstrated an incredible resolution to repel three championship points to Sinner in the fourth set and in a way won in a break in equality of fifth set, the very first time that every man has managed such a feat to Roland Garros, according to the Broadcaster TNT Sports.
Five and a half hours after facing the first service of the Sinner match, Alcaraz faced the last Italian, playing a formidable passing through the line before falling on the ground because a large part of the noisy crowd at the Court Philippe-Chatrier celebrated a victory that he would never forget.
“I just want to say thank you for everything (to) my team, my family,” said Spanish afterwards. “I have the privilege of being able to experience great things with you. … This trophy also belongs to you.”
“This tournament for me is really, really special,” he added. “I can’t wait to come here year after year.”
Alcaraz now won his fifth major title at the age of 22, one month and three days, the same age as his hero Rafael Nadal was when he won his fifth in Wimbledon in 2008.
But the world n ° 2 has never won like this. Even the endless parade of the recordings, this set of matches does not quite do justice to remarkable tennis exposed.
It was the second longest final of the Grand Colem in the open era; Alcaraz is only the sixth player to return from two sets to win a final of the French Open; And Spaniard is also the youngest player to win two consecutive male titles in Paris since Nadal, the King of clay, won four consecutive between 2005 and 2008.
The sinner and Alcaraz have long been presented as the next great rivalry of tennis, but, until Sunday, they had never met in a final of the Grand Slam.
In the accumulation, there was a feeling that this match was the first of a new era for male tennis and, if it was indeed the first glimpse of a new era, tennis fans are in a decade roller coaster.
Alcaraz won the first time when, in the fifth match, he broke the sinner, converting his seventh breakdown. But the Italian responded with his own break instantly before Alcaraz had to delay the game when he seemed to have something in his eyes.
When he returned to the courtyard, always touching his eye, he looked at somehow. Just over three minutes later, he had been broken again and the sinner was a configuration.
The second set continued in a similar way and Alcaraz found itself 4-1, its wildly contrasting shots on the occasion of those of its metronomic opponent.
The 22 -year -old recovered to force an equality break, but his efforts were ultimately in vain; Suddenly, he should do something he had never done before – come back from two sets to win a Grand Slam match.
When the Spaniard failed to keep his service in the first match of the third set, such a return seemed impossible. Less than 15 minutes later, however, Alcaraz had broken twice and led the third set 3-1.
Before much longer, it was used for the set. The sinner had other ideas, striking back with a strong forehand to put things into service. But Alcaraz should not be denied this time, breaking instantly to make sure that the Italian has lost a big slam for the first time since the fourth round of the Australian Open five months ago.
It seemed that Sinner had finally taken the decisive blow when he broke his opponent for the sixth time to increase 4-3 in the fourth set, before climbing 0-40 on the service of Alcaraz with the score at 3-5. Sinner had three championship points, it seemed that it was over for Alcaraz.
Picked one of the largest returns in the open era.
Alcaraz won the next five points to withdraw a clutch socket, followed by eight of the next nine. The sinner forced a break in equality, but the Spaniard had the momentum now and recovered from a mini-rapture to force a fifth set.
When the 22 -year -old broke the sinner in the very first match of the decisive whole, it seemed that his grain and his determination prevailed over the balance and technique of his opponent. But, with Alcaraz serving for the championship, there was another twist when the sinner showed that he could also hang in the match, breaking with apparent ease.
An astonishing match would need a third equality break to settle it, and it was Alcaraz, after five hours and 29 minutes, which could occur when he needed most, winning the first seven points before rounding it 10-2.
It was about as close as you could see it – Sinner actually preceded his opponent from 193 points to 192, but it was Alcaraz who was able to drop out of the decisive.
“I want to start with Jannik is incredible, the level you have,” said Spanish afterwards. “I know the hard work you put every day, it’s huge … I’m sure you are going to be champion not once but a lot, several times. It’s a privilege to share the court with you.”
“I am really, really happy to be able to make the story with you in this tournament, in other tournaments, you are a huge inspiration for everyone, including me, so good luck and all the best for what happens,” he added.
Sinner – Who has reached the unwanted record to become the first player in the era open to winning his first 20 sets of a male event in the Grand Colem and not to win the title – had naturally seemed Shellchock.
“It’s easier to play than to speak now,” he said after his very first defeat in a major final. “My team, thank you obviously for putting me in this position. We have done our best today. We gave everything we had. ”
“I won’t sleep very well tonight but it’s okay,” he added.
