On the red carpet, at the request of Emma Chamberlain for Vogue who was the creator of the look, Cardi hesitated and forgot his name in the moment, instead noting, “They’re Asian and everything.”

Cardi later received backlash online for her comments, which were criticized by critics for being racially insensitive. VogueGilbert’s former GM Cheah also called out the “Bodak Yellow” rapper in an Instagram comments section, writing, “For the record and recognition, and no thanks to Cardi B, the designer of her dress is Sensen Lii who is Chinese. The dress took two months to make. Personally I think it’s boring and not even in theme, but she chose it and should have at least remembered his name and not just that he’s “Asian” (eye rolling emoji ).

In response, Cardi took to Instagram to defend herself, explaining that she “had a lot on her mind” and had been “very scared” since she was rushed to the front of the line at the Met Gala. “I kind of forgot how to pronounce the designer’s name because his name is a little complicated…my mind was racing,” she recalls.

Cardi said she wasn’t trying to “be offensive,” adding, “I feel like the designer and my stylist worked really hard on this theme, so for you to be a little shady because she feels offended or whatever, this just proves why. you are the former director. You are trying to offend me, but you are actually offending the people behind the scenes.
