Car launches this week: Tata’s ₹10 lakh Curvv ICE, Hyundai’s off-roading Ioniq 5 XRT and more

The first week of September 2024 saw exciting new releases in the automobile sector from Tata, Hyundai, Volvo, Jawa Yezdi Motorcycles and Mercedes-Benz India. While Volvo, Audi and Mercedes-Benz India introduced new models in the premium segment, Tata Motors launched the Curvv ICE at ₹9.99 lakhs.

Here’s a look at some of the biggest automotive launches this week:

Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT

Hyundai has unveiled the Ioniq 5 XRT, a new variant designed for off-road use. It features a dual-motor all-wheel drive system and is expected to offer similar performance to the standard Ioniq 5 AWD, which produces 321 hp and 605 Nm of torque. It features the larger 84 kWh battery pack found across the entire Ioniq 5 range.

The Ioniq 5 XRT is the first Hyundai vehicle to feature Tesla’s North American Charging (NACS) port, which provides access to over 17,000 Tesla Supercharger stations. The pre-facelift Ioniq 5 is priced at ₹46.05 lakh (ex-showroom) in India.

Volvo XC90 facelift and EX90

This week, Volvo unveiled two major new models: the all-new EX90 and the facelifted XC90. The XC90 will now be available exclusively as a hybrid, ditching the diesel and petrol engines. The T8 plug-in hybrid model features a 310 hp turbo petrol engine paired with a 145 hp electric motor, offering an electric range of up to 70 km.

It is equipped with a 14.7 kWh battery, which can be fully recharged in around three hours using an AC fast charger. The EX90 is Volvo’s latest electric SUV, equipped with a 111 kWh battery that offers a WLTP range of up to 600 km on a single charge.

Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680

The Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV, the latest from Mercedes-Benz India, features a dual-electric motor setup producing 658 hp and 950 Nm of torque. Priced at Rs 2.25 crore (ex-showroom), it comes with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/h.

Certified according to WLTP standards, the electric SUV offers a range of up to 611 km on a single charge. With fast charging, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in 31 minutes, while a 20-minute charge offers a range of 300 km.

Jawa 42 FJ

On Tuesday, Jawa Yezdi Motorcycles launched the all-new Jawa 42 FJ in India, starting at ₹1.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Positioned as a sportier and more powerful variant in the Jawa 42 range, it is priced ₹26,000 higher than the base Jawa 42.

The motorcycle is powered by a 334cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine that produces 21.45bhp and 29.62Nm of torque. It is mated to a six-speed gearbox and an assisted slipper clutch. Bookings are now open and deliveries are expected to begin soon. The 42 FJ will compete against the Royal Enfield Classic 350, TVS Ronin and Royal Enfield Hunter 350.

Tata Curvv ICE

Tata Motors has launched the Curvv ICE with an introductory price of ₹9.99 lakh for the entry-level petrol variant. The entry-level diesel variant starts at ₹11.49 lakh (ex-showroom). It is powered by Tata’s new 1.2-litre T-GDi turbo-petrol engine, producing 125 bhp.

The vehicle is available with a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT automatic transmission. Deliveries will begin from September 12 and the introductory price is valid for bookings made before October 31.

Next-generation Audi Q5 SUV

Audi also launched the third-generation Q5 SUV this week, which features a completely redesigned exterior and interior. It is available with three engine options: the base model with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 204 hp and 340 Nm of torque; a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine producing 204 hp and 400 Nm of torque; and the SQ5 variant with a 3.0-litre V6 engine producing 367 hp and 550 Nm of torque.

Aston Martin Vanquish 2025

At a prestigious event in Venice, Aston Martin unveiled the 2025 Vanquish. It is powered by a 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 engine developing 824 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful engine ever installed in an Aston Martin.

The Vanquish comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds, with a top speed of 214 mph. It could debut in India in the second quarter of 2025, with its price expected to surpass that of the DBS.
