Cannes Film Festival: discover the photos from the red carpet from the first week

CANNES, France (AP) — Hollywood royalty is returning to the Cannes film festival for its annual celebration of cinema on the Côte d’Azur.

The premieres each evening bring an elegant parade of stars and moments that become indelible Cannes images, whether The return of Francis Ford Coppola at the Palais des Festivals where the French actress Judith Godrèche and other actors placing their hands on their mouths to draw attention to the emerging #MeToo movement in France.

There is also time for lightness, like Anya Taylor-Joy salutes her ‘Furiosa’ directorGeorge Miller, or the arrival of Messithe canine star of “Anatomy of a Fall” who performed tricks for photographers and served as a bridge to last year’s remarkable festival.

Daytime photo shoots can become a playground for stars and photographers, like when Nic Cage threw his hat in while promoting “The Surfer.” (Hats have been a must-have accessory this year, worn by Coppola and Giancarlo Esposito at the “Megalopolis” premiere; Meryl Streep, Honorary Palme d’Oropted for one for her photocall.)

Filmmakers praise Cannes for the way it celebrates films and the global platform it provides. It is therefore completely normal that Coppola returns, 45 years after his “Apocalypse Now” swept throughout the festival, as did Paul Schrader, who wrote “Taxi Driver,” winner of the 1976 Palme d’Or.

Miller was also a vocal fan of the Cannes Film Festival since he was a juror and used it to launch several films.

“I got hooked on it just because it’s like a movie camp,” he says. “It’s really a kind of optimal cinema.”

And there’s still a week to go.
