A long time ago (45 years to be precise), Francis Ford Coppola won the Palme d’Or for “Apocalypse Now”. Today, the director of “Mégalopolis” is preparing to take the stage again at the Cannes Film Festival, this time to present an honorary Palme d’Or to his friend George Lucas.
Hosted by “Call My Agent” star Camille Cottin, the awards ceremony for the 2024 Cannes Film Festival competition is underway. The presenters immediately began making political statements, when the president of the short film jury and Belgian actress Lubna Azabal called for the release of all Gaza hostages.
The Caméra d’Or for best first feature film went to “Armand” by Halfdan Ullman Tondel, while a special mention (out of the norm) went to the Directors’ Fortnight selection “Mongrel”, co-directed by Chiang Wei Liang and You Qiao Yin.
The president of the jury, Greta Gerwig, chaired a jury composed of the Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona, the Turkish actor and screenwriter Ebru Ceylan, the Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino, the American actress Lily Gladstone, the Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, by Lebanese actor and director Nadine Labaki and French stars Eva. Green and Omar Sy.
