Canelo Alvarez’s rival leaves British boxer grimacing in pain after scoring sickening 40-second body shot knockout

Christian Mbilli made quick work of Mark Heffron on Saturday night in Quebec, Canada.

Heffron – a former British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion – was no match for Mbilli as he was felled by a vicious left hook to the body in the opening 40 seconds.

The Briton’s face was a picture of discomfort as he collapsed, gasping for air.

Heffron was then sent off by the referee as he fell to the fourth defeat of his 35-fight professional career (30-4-1).

Mbilli (27-0, 23KO) remains undefeated and continues his collision course with Canelo Alvarez.

The Frenchman has campaigned tirelessly to fight the undisputed super middleweight king and is currently ranked in the top three by all four major sanctioning bodies at 168 pounds.

“I know Canelo is the best. Everyone knows that,” Mbilli said in January after his victory over Rohan Murdock.

“I want to show that I am the best in the division. My goal is to fight Canelo. I will do everything I can to fight it.

Although Mbilli’s record looks impressive on paper, he has yet to face another undefeated professional or top super middleweight contender.

To give himself the best chance against Canelo, he will need to step up in his next fight – and it looks like that will be the case.

According to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, Mbilli has reached an agreement with three-time world title challenger Sergey Derevyanhcenko for an August 17 fight in Quebec, Canada.

The deal was contingent on Mbilli beating Heffron.

Considering he suffered virtually no damage during his fight against “Kid Dynamite,” the three-month time frame is perfect for Mbilli, who will want to continue this momentum.

Derevyanhcenko has fought some of the greatest middleweight and super middleweight fighters of his generation, including Gennady Golovkin, Jermall Charlo and Daniel Jacobs.

Despite the level of opposition he faced, no one was able to stop the Ukrainian veteran in the distance.

If Mbilli can do what they could not, it would be a major statement.
