Cancer-stricken Shannen Doherty preparing for death by downsizing, letting go of possessions
Shannen Doherty is learning to let go.
The “Beverly Hills, 90210” alum — who is suffering from stage 4 breast cancer — candidly said she cleaned out her storage units and homes to facilitate an “easier transition” for her mother , Rosa, upon his death.
“My priority right now is my mom,” the actress said during Monday’s episode of her “Let’s Be Clear” podcast. “I know it’s going to be hard for her if I die before her.”
She continued: “Because it’s going to be very hard for her, I want other things to be much easier. I don’t want her to have a lot to deal with. I don’t want her to have four storage units full of furniture.
Doherty, 52, said she began going through her belongings to give away or sell antiques and other items she had collected over the years “just in case” something happened to her.
The actress recently took a trip south to her Tennessee home to pack up her belongings after deciding to give up her dream of living on the property and raising horses.
“So we were in Tennessee and I was setting up one of the places there,” she continued. “It was really difficult and very emotional because to some extent I felt like I was giving up on this dream of building this property, building a house for myself and a house for my mother and then expanding the barn.”
Doherty added that she plans to build a sanctuary for horses “abandoned by their owners because they are too old” or “broken down.”
“It was one of my dreams,” she said through tears.
“I was packing my bags and I started crying…I felt like I was giving up on a dream and what did that mean to me? Did this mean I was giving up on life? Did that mean I was throwing in the towel?
“And my mother was there and she said to me, ‘Don’t get rid of this place, it’s okay.’ You don’t have to and you can continue. I said, ‘Yeah, absolutely I can.’
A week later, Doherty returned home to pack all of her belongings into a U-haul to take them back to California.

The “Charmed” star explained that she had an epiphany while there, realizing her dream was a “stupid idea” because of how much it would cost her to renovate the property.
She said letting go was “the right thing to do,” knowing it would bring her a sense of “peace.”
“I can still live my dream of helping horses,” Doherty added. “I can still live that dream by actually participating in rescues that are much more capable of doing that.”
The actress explained that giving up property and other assets allowed her to “leave behind a cleaner, easier transition” for her family.
Through the process, Doherty learned that his business didn’t bring him as much joy as creating memories with his mother and loved ones.
“It allows me to travel more because I earn money, I sell it,” she continues. “Then I create different memories and build memories with the people I love.
“I can take my mom on vacation because I have all this extra play money lying around and I’m not dipping into the money that’s in my estate that’s going to ensure that everyone in my life is taken care of one day. time I will be. dead.”
The “Heathers” star has been open with fans about her cancer journey since she was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.
Although Doherty went into remission in 2017, the cancer returned two years later, returning to stage 4.
The actress gave an update on her health last year, revealing that her cancer had spread to her brain and later to her bones.
Despite the ’90s icon “fighting to stay alive”, Doherty has been open about her preparations for death, even admitting there were “a lot of people” she didn’t want at her funeral.
