Alcohol -related cancer deaths have doubled
According to new data from Moffitt Cancer Center, alcohol-related cancer deaths have doubled in the United States in the past three decades.
The researchers studied seven cancers related to alcohol, those of breast, liver, throat, vocal box and mouth, as well as colorectal and esophageal cancer.
In 1990, there were 11,896 cancer deaths linked to alcohol. This issue is skyrocketing at 23,207 in 2021.
The increase is attributed to the increase in alcohol consumption and its role established as a carcinogen, contributing to various cancers.
“The more a person is drinking both in volume and frequency, the more risk,” said the epidemiologist of the Moffitt Cancer Center, Kathleen Egan. “When we drink, our body breaks down alcohol into acetaldehyde, a known carcinogen that can damage DNA. This damaged DNA can create mutations that can cause cancer.”
