In recent weeks, the American president-elect, who is due to enter the White House in less than two weeks, has repeatedly raised the possibility of the United States and Canada merging.
Until now, the Canadian authorities had never responded to the mockery and remarks of Donald Trump, who is also threatening to increase customs duties with his northern neighbor to 25%.
“A total misunderstanding”
Canada will “never back down from threats,” added Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, one of the contenders to replace Justin Trudeau who resigned on Monday. The latter, however, remains in office until his party finds a successor.
“President-elect Trump’s comments demonstrate a complete misunderstanding of what makes Canada strong,” she added.
Donald Trump’s attacks in recent weeks have contributed to aggravating the Canadian political crisis which has just resulted in the fall of Justin Trudeau, in power since 2015.
