The Marine was identified as Cpl. Miguel A. Maya, a Texas native assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 303, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine aircraft wing. He worked as an avionics technician for U/AH-1 aircraft, a role that allowed him to test, maintain and repair helicopter communications, navigation and other systems. His hometown was not liberated.

“My deepest condolences go to Cape Town. Maya’s loved ones during this difficult time,” said Lt. Col. Jason Caster, squadron commander based at Camp Pendleton. “Our priority right now is caring for the families of our fallen Marines and ensuring the well-being of our Marines and their loved ones.”

Authorities have given few details about the circumstances of the death, which occurred around 5 p.m. on April 23 on the base. Officials first described the incident as occurring during “routine military operations” and later called it an “air-to-ground accident.”

“The incident remains under investigation and no additional information is available at this time,” the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing said in a statement Friday.
