Cameron Diaz says she’s open to a ‘Mask’ sequel, but only on one condition

Cameron Diaz is up for a sequel to “The Mask” — but doesn’t want to carry it herself.

Diaz is currently experiencing something of a career renaissance after more than a decade away from Hollywood. While promoting her new film, aptly titled “Back in Action,” she seemed ready to reprise the role that made her famous in 1994 – but on one condition.

When informed during an interview with Access Hollywood on Friday that Jim Carrey had said he was open to a “Mask” sequel and asked if Diaz would return as her character, Tina Carlyle, she responded excitedly: “Oh my God, did he say that? I mean, if Jim is on board.

“I’ve been wearing these coattails since day one,” Diaz added.

The blockbuster marked Diaz’s first major film role, giving him an iconic entry into the character that served as a real-life springboard for a decades-long career to come.

She has since found her “Back in Action” co-star Jamie Foxx to be her biggest cheerleader.

In an interview with ComicBook.com in December, Carrey indicated that he might be up for a sequel: “Oh my God, you know, it must be the right idea. If someone had the right idea, I suppose.

But he also noted that he announced his retirement in 2022 – only to return for a third “Sonic the Hedgehog” film after a lucrative offer he couldn’t refuse.

“It’s not really about the money,” he continued. “I’m joking about the money. …But I never know. You can’t be specific about these things. I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power at rest.”

Diaz herself has previously joked that she’s “semi-retired” and recently revealed that she took a break after 2014’s “Annie” because she wanted to spend time with her family. The actor married Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden in 2015 and has two children.

Diaz said she only came back to work with Foxx. On Friday’s Graham Norton Show, she recalled thinking that if she had to leave her family to act, she “wanted to do it with the most talented man in the entertainment business.”
