Callum Smith made his light heavyweight debut with a scary knockout of Lenin Castillo on Saturday night.
The former WBA super middleweight champion looked impressive in his first 175-pound fight, which came on Anthony Joshua’s undercard against Oleksandr Usyk.
However, his celebrations were quickly cut short.
Smith hammered Castillo with an overhand right in the second round that saw him collapse back onto the canvas.
He lay on his back shaking and the referee immediately called off the fight.
Medical staff responded quickly and took care of Castillo, who was pulled out of the ring minutes later.
Fortunately, positive updates followed the disturbing scene.
Eddie Hearn revealed that Castillo was “responsive” as he left the stadium to go to the hospital.
Sky Sports added that he was “conscious” and only went to the hospital for “precautionary measures”.
Smith was beaten by Canelo Alvarez last year, but will now be looking to make an impact in his new weight class.
The light heavyweight champions will undoubtedly notice his first win in the division.
