Residents of Vallejo, California are desperately waiting for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to step in and combat the crime that has been plaguing their Bay Area community for some time.
The area suffers from dangerous car shows, drug crimes, shootings and shoplifting incidents, Fox News reported Monday.
In her petition on Change.org, resident Paula Conley addressed the issues and said:
I am deeply concerned about the safety of my community. Our city is struggling with increasing crime due to a severe understaffing in our local police department. We deserve a clean and safe city where we can live without fear.
She also cited rampant prostitution and speeding that make the neighborhood unsafe for neighbors.

“We believe additional support from California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers and the Sheriff could significantly help resolve this issue,” Conley wrote, adding “Therefore, we ask Governor Newsom to deploy CHP/Sheriff’s officers to help Vallejo solve its spiraling crime problem.”
Fox’s report says the CHP will “expand its presence” in the region, noting that the governor sent CHP officers to crime-ridden Oakland months ago.
“We have exactly the same problems as Oakland, but we’re just a small city. It’s going to take manpower to really help us,” Conley said.
Video footage from August showed a car show in Vallejo that ended with one person dead and at least one other person injured, according to KPIX:
At a recent news conference, CHP Deputy Commissioner Ezery Beauchamp said the agency has been assisting the Vallejo Police Department since the summer.
Newsom recently said city leaders need to address police staffing issues. He told Vallejo residents they were not going to ask the CHP to do the job that local officers should do, but that state leaders would support them.
Conley agreed with Newsom’s statements and said that, as in the case of Oakland police officers, Vallejo needs to run its department properly and efficiently to serve the public well.
The Fox article noted: “In September, the governor signed emergency legislation to allow retired Solano County sheriff’s deputies to return to law enforcement full time to help respond to Vallejo’s public safety needs. »
In December, Conley told KTVU, “It’s a man-made disaster. It’s a crisis. We need help and it’s going to take manpower. I’m from here. I love him. I hate seeing things like that and I hate people who are disrespectful like they are.
As of Monday, the petition had 3,517 signatures.
