A California vegan restaurant chain closed permanently on Sunday after furious activists targeted the business for offering meat to its customers.
Sage Regenerative Kitchen & Brewery has locations in Pasadena and Echo Park, but financial issues such as rent and taxes also contributed to its closure, the New York Post reported Sunday.
Owner Mollie Engelhart was dejected after vegans who disagreed with the added menu options protested the decision to update the menu. The company had added bison burgers, cheese and other foods to attract diners.
“Engelhart said everything was grown using regenerative farming methods, which are believed to have less environmental impact than traditional farming,” the report said. Job article read.
However, the plan apparently didn’t work and infuriated vegans who gave the restaurant bad reviews online and made negative comments on the restaurant’s social media pages.
“There is no honor in killing needlessly. You are guilty of crimes against compassion. You’ve never been vegan. Vegans don’t go back and let innocent animals down. Regeneration comes from rewilding, not just improved welfare. Sad and hypocritical and deserving of karma,” one person wrote in a video posted by Engelhart in April.
“Vegan for animals, always,” the person added.
In an Instagram post a few days ago, the restaurant announced that its last day of service would be Sunday, writing: “It is with heavy hearts that we close the chapter on Sage. »
However, many people seemed to rejoice at the news:
“Best gift for the holidays, Chef Mollie is crying about not being able to serve people dead animals anymore. Boo hoo,” one user commented, while another said: “It’s a great day for animals. One less butcher shop masquerading as a restaurant in town.
Another person had a different view of the situation.

In the restaurant’s message posted Sunday, the owners shared their gratitude to everyone who has supported them over the past few years.
“Thank you for 14 incredible years of support. With love from the Sage family, Mollie and Elias, we say goodbye,” the message read.
