California Health Quarantine molds. What you need to know

California public health officials have announced around forty on molds that are not commercially harvested, warning that natural toxins make species potentially toxic to humans during this time of year.

The order of the State Department of Public Health, which is issued each year, takes place until October 31 and warns against all types of molds harvested in sport off the west coast.

During this six -month period, mussels can have natural toxins which can cause paralytic poisoning of crustaceans and biotoxins to Domo acid, also known as poisoning with amnesiac crustaceans.

The emergence of biotoxins in the molds is unpredictable and their concentrations can quickly increase, according to the public health officials of the State.

The quarantine area extends along the Californian coast of Oregon on the Mexican border – including all the bays, coves and ports of the County of Los Angeles, according to public health officials.

Why do these biotoxins occur at this time of the year?

The amount of algae that produces toxins, also known as Phytoplankton, is normally small and is not threat. However, when algae flourish during this time of year, the number of phytoplankton increases considerably.

This alga, a toxic part, in turn becomes a food source of crustacean species, including mussels, clams, oysters and scallops.

When crustaceans filter and eat toxic algae, they accumulate biotoxins in their tissues, which is not harmful to them.

Finally, algae decrease or disappear and crustaceans rinse the toxins of their systems, according to health officials.

However, this can be several days, several months or more before they are safe to eat again – and there is no way to obviously determine if this is the case.

Cooking crustaceans does not reliably get rid of toxins.

To what extent are the two types of poisoning dangerous?

The consumption of toxic crustaceans can lead to death because there are no known antidotes, according to public health officials.

The treatment of someone who consumed a mold with toxins includes respiratory support until toxins are eliminated from the body.

Since 1903, 582 total cases – including 39 deaths – have been attributed to the paralytic poisoning of crustaceans in California.

Death can occur within 30 minutes of consumption of toxic crustaceans, warn civil servants.

But officials say that the contraction of poisoning is rare, due to public health efforts to dissuade people from eating potentially toxic molds.

There was no human case of human poisoning reported in California.

What are the symptoms?

The first symptoms of paralytic poisoning on crustaceans include lip tingling and tongue that could start from a few hours to a few hours after eating toxic crustaceans.

These symptoms are generally followed by a loss of balance and muscle coordination, linked discourse and difficulty swallowing.

In serious cases, complete muscle paralysis and death by asphyxiation can occur.

Can I eat commercially grown mussels?

Yes. The mussels cultivated commercially certified companies are exempt from the forties because they are required to submit frequent samples to the Department of Public Health of the State for tests.

If high levels of toxins are detected in a sample, the area from which it was harvested is closed until the conditions become safe.

Are clams and scallops correct to eat?

The clams and scallops are not part of the forties. However, civil servants warn that if you consume clams and scallops, you must remove and throw away the digestive organs or the viscera and all the other dark parts.

Only white meat of clams and scallops should be prepared to eat.
