Two former members of the athletics department of Cal State Long Beach are accused of having stolen thousands of dollars from taxpayers at the university by subjecting false leaves and dividing the profits, the authorities said.
Oscar Perez Almanza, 38, and Hender Noe Maxwell, 38, were each accused of a conspiracy chief to commit a large flight and a flight chief, the county of the County Dist. Atty. Nathan Hochman announced on Monday. They both pleaded not guilty.
The pair is accused of having organized a payroll program in 2022 while Almanza worked as a field supervisor in the athletics department and Maxwell had left a land worker. Prosecutors say that Maxwell has submitted false time leaves, invoicing university for hundreds of working hours, which Almanza then approved even if he knew that Maxwell was no longer used by the school.
The pair would have stolen $ 36,560 at the university via this program and divide profits.
“I am dismayed by the acts of cheeky crime that would have been committed by employees of California State University, Long Beach, an institution that depends on public funding and public confidence,” said Hochman in a statement. “The flying of the revered public university system of California flies to taxpayers and thousands of students who count on the university for tuition fees and schooling and career opportunities.”
The duo is faced with their accusations of allegations that the offenses indicated planning, sophistication, professionalism and a high monetary value, according to the District Prosecutor’s Office.
If they are condemned as charged, they are each excited a maximum sentence of three years in the county prison.
Almanza and Maxwell were arrested on Monday and released provided they give up their passports. They must be back in court on April 14. This case was the subject of an investigation by the CSULB police service.
“We appreciate our university police for their initial investigation and the district prosecutor’s office for continuing this case,” said Jim Milbury, Director of Information Media for Jim Milbury, Cal State Long Beach.
