The Union Cabinet paved the way for the presentation and passage of the 2021 Agricultural Law Repeal Bill during the winter session of Parliament.
The winter session of Parliament would start from November 29.
Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced during the Gurupurab the government’s intention to withdraw the laws in the interest of the nation.
Prime Minister Modi called on protesting farmers to end their agitation against these reform measures and return home as he called for a fresh start. However, the farmers maintained that they would not cancel their protests at the Delhi border until the laws were formally repealed by parliament. In addition, they said the protests will continue until the government enacts a Minimum Support Price (MSP) law and dismisses Union State Minister for the Interior Ajay Mishra.
Thousands of farmers in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, under the aegis of various farmers’ unions, have been demonstrating at the borders of the national capital since November 26 last year to demand the repeal of the three agricultural laws. The Farmers’ Body said nearly 700 farmers were martyred in the struggle.
