Buzz Williams named Maryland’s male basketball coach

College Park, MD – Buzz Williams was appointed the new head coach of the Maryland male basketball program, as announced by Colleen Sorem, director of interim athletics Barry P. Gossett. Williams will be presented at a press conference at noon on Wednesday, April 2 on the main courtyard of the Xfinity Center. Williams led his programs to 11 appearances at the NCAA tournament and 13 seasons of 20 victories in 18 years as a chief trainer.

More recently, Williams was chief coach for six seasons in Texas A & M from 2019 to 2025, leading the Aggies to the NCAA tournament in each of the last three seasons. He was appointed coach of the SEC year twice, in 2019-20 and 2022-23. Williams was a head coach of Virginia Tech (five, 2014-19), Marquette (six years, 2008-14) and New Orleans (Un year, 2006-07). His global record after 18 seasons as a chief coach is 373-228 (.621).

Williams won at least 100 games in Marquette, Virginia Tech and Texas A&M. He seeks to become the third coach of the Division I head coach to win at least 100 games in four different institutions, as well as the coach of Maryland Hall of Fame Lefty Driesell (Davidson, Maryland, James Madison, Georgia State) and Steve Alford (Iowa, New Mexico, Ucla, Nevada).

Last season, Williams led the Aggies to a 23-11 record as they headed for the second round of the NCAA tournament. A&M was classified as high as n ° 7 during the 2024-25 season.

By entering its 32nd season as a university basketball coach, including 31 seasons at Division I, the history of Williams training includes stays as an assistant, associated head coach and chief coach. Williams has led, recruited or developed 16 NBA players during his career, totaling more than $ 400 million in total wages and nearly 3,000 games played.

Brent Langdon Williams was born in Greenville, Texas, and grew up in the small town of Texas in Van Alstyne (4,369 inhabitants), located 80 miles north of Dallas, Texas. He is one of the rare chief coaches of Division I of the NCAA who did not play university basketball. Instead, he was a student assistant at Navarro JC from 1990 to 1992 and Oklahoma City University from 1992 to 1994.

He received the nickname “buzz” while working as an energetic student assistant for the longtime coach and mentor of the Navarro College Lewis Orr. Williams was inducted at the Bulldog renowned temple of Navarro College in 2021 while the school honored the mounting of Williams of the “soil maintenance director” in the head coach.

Williams’ most impactful initiative may have been the “Buzz’s Bunch” foundation, which connects young people to special needs to basketball game with an annual Buzz’s Bunch game in the fall and a summer clinic. Originally founded during William’s time in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in Marquette, the buzz group continued during his stay in Blacksburg, Virginia in Virginia Tech and now in Texas A&M.
