Buy something or leave, says Starbucks

Starbucks says it is rolling back rules for its cafes in North America that allowed people to use their facilities even if they hadn’t purchased anything.

The changes, set to take effect on January 27, are a reversal from a policy introduced six years ago that allowed people to linger in Starbucks outlets and use their restrooms without performing a check-in. purchase.

The move is part of the “return to Starbucks” strategy, a plan announced by the company’s new boss as he tries to combat declining sales.

The world’s largest coffee chain says its new code of conduct – which also addresses harassment and bans smoking and drinking alcohol across borders – aims to make its stores more welcoming.

“Implementing a code of conduct for cafes… is a practical measure that helps us prioritize our paying customers who want to sit down and enjoy our cafes,” a spokesperson said from Starbucks to BBC News.

“These updates are part of a broader set of changes we’re making to improve the coffee experience as we work to return to Starbucks.”

The company said the new rules will be posted in every store and staff will be instructed to ask anyone who violates the code of conduct to leave. This includes allowing employees to call the police if necessary.

In 2018, Starbucks decided to allow free access to its cafes and restrooms after the controversial arrest of two men at one of its Philadelphia cafes.

Other changes are expected to be introduced later this month, including offering a free refill of hot or iced coffee to customers who purchase a beverage to consume on-site.

Starbucks tried to boost sagging sales as it grappled with backlash over price increases and boycotts sparked by the Israel-Gaza war.

Brian Niccol, who previously ran the Mexican food chain Chipotle, was introduced at Starbucks last year to help turn the company around.

Mr. Niccol attempted to improve the customer experience at Starbucks coffee shops by revamp your menus and cafes.
