They said: “Two members of staff could smell alcohol on him and there was also a report from a passenger who also said they could smell alcohol coming from him while they were in the bus.”

“He was then brought to the Shandwick Place Hub during his dinner break and was breathalyzed.”

“Because he was on break, that means he had already been to the airport at least twice by that point. He is a very calm man and he has no reason to do this. It just came out of nowhere.

When approached by EdinburghLive, Mr Stitt said: “I don’t want to tell you about any story about me. I just want to be left alone to move forward and get better.

A Lothian spokesperson said: “Lothian has a robust drugs and alcohol policy in place and all colleagues undergo regular randomized testing to ensure compliance.

“We do not comment on matters relating to the individual circumstances of current or former employees.”
