Bulgaria appoints caretaker government with Dimitar Glavchev as new PM – POLITICO

Radev then instructed Glavchev, a former member of Gabriel’s GERB party, to form an interim government within seven days. Glavchev presented the composition of the government late last week and the interim government was sworn in at a special ceremony Tuesday morning.

Nikolai Denkov, who represents We Continue the Change, led the Bulgarian government for the first nine months of the planned rotation, with Gabriel as deputy minister and foreign minister. He resigned in March, theoretically paving the way for Gabriel to become prime minister for the next nine months.

But Gabriel, who previously led the EU’s digital and innovation portfolios during two terms as European commissioner, said she had withdrawn in the face of the “coordinated refusal” of 11 ministers to participate in the government she proposed “and the lack of agreement during subsequent negotiations. »

In an interview with the Financial Times, outgoing Prime Minister Denkov said corruption in Bulgaria paved the way for Russian interference and contributed to the collapse of the ruling coalition. Denkov, who led the government for less than a year, said he tried to combat both corruption and Russian interference during his tenure because they are “linked to each other.” .

“A lot of Russian influence in the past, in the energy sector for example, came from corruption,” Denkov told the newspaper in an interview published Tuesday.
