As long as range anxiety persists, you could argue that manufacturers publishing huge range figures between stops are only making things worse, convincing late and hesitant users that range is the best solution. only statistic that counts. That said, with 1,600 km (~995 miles) of combined range, the new Buick Electra E7 is an impressive and breathtaking drive.
Built around the SAIC-GM True Dragon Plug-in Hybrid Pro powertrain that combines a high-output 1.5L internal combustion generator with a powerful 165 kW (~210 hp) electric motor and LFP battery, the new Buick Electra E7 crossover promises up to 210 km (~130 miles) of pure electric driving before ICE kicks in to go even further.
In practice, this means that a driver who plugs in at night would be able to drive on the battery almost anywhere, almost every day, and would never have to worry about planning their stops before hitting the road for a long trip. In America, at least, there’s a sense that the freedom to suffer the consequences of a lack of foresight is what’s fueling the remaining EV holdouts.
That’s to say : this thing would be perfect for the US market.
Totally modern
In addition to showing off the styling of the new Buick with the release of these first official images, SAIC-GM has confirmed that the new Electra E7 PHEV will feature the company’s most advanced semi-autonomous ADAS, based on the Momenta R6 learner model.
This ADAS strategy debuted in the Electra L7 sedan launched late last year. This car, which has sparked speculation about a U.S. return of the famous Buick nameplate, has built-in radar and LiDAR sensors in the now-familiar spot on the roof just above the windshield, which is ideal for giving the sensor a commanding view of the road.
The Electra E7 also features a return to GM’s old active suspension concept, with CarNewsChina reporting that the new vehicle incorporates “an RTD continuously variable damping preemptive suspension system. This system scans the road surface 500 times per second and adjusts damping in milliseconds… (and) can proactively identify road imperfections such as speed bumps and manholes up to 20 meters in advance, allowing pre-adjustment of damping force to improve passenger comfort.”
I don’t know about you guys, but 850 miles into the unique reach of the E7 and my kidneys would probably be grateful for anything that would smooth out Chicago’s potholes – but that’s just me. Take a look at the photos above, then let us know what you think of Buick’s latest hybrid crossover in the comments.
