Buc-ee’s, known for its gas stations and giant stores, plans a new center in Kansas City, Kansas

A convenience store chain known for its giant gas stations — and its giant fan base — is eyeing a location near Kansas Speedway for its next travel center.

Bucc’es, based in Texas, recently submitted initial plans for the site for review by the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, according to online documents.

A company spokesperson declined to comment Friday.

The vacant land listed in the application borders the Speedway and is owned by the Kansas International Speedway Corporation, according to Wyandotte County land records. It’s about 57 acres and its appraised value this year was $1.9 million.

Known for building sprawling travel centers, Bucc’es is a stop that becomes a destination for some. The chain opened its first store in Missouri last year and received a warm reception from fans.

The 53,000-square-foot Springfield center has, among other things, 120 fuel pumps, a barbecue station, a jerky bar and a fudge shop.

Buc-ee’s isn’t the only big gas station making a splash in the Kansas City metro.

St. Louis-based Wally’s, which also has a reputation for its massive convenience stores, launched its first local destination last year. Its Independence store is the rival company’s fourth.

The Star’s David Hudnall, Ilana Arougheti and Nathan Pilling contributed to this report.
