The Bruins made a low-risk move in hopes of bolstering their depth Saturday, signing veteran forward Tyler Johnson to a professional tryout contract.

Johnson, 34, has played 738 career games over 12 seasons in the National Hockey League. He has scored 193 goals and 238 career assists and has won the Stanley Cup twice — in 2020 and 2021 with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Johnson, who is 5-foot-8 and 185 pounds, most recently played for the Chicago Blackhawks, where he appeared in 67 games last season.

Johnson hopes to extend his successful run in the league and prove he has more firepower as his career winds down.

The Bruins will examine Johnson in training camp to see if he fits the roster and decide if he’s earned a roster spot.
