The president of Boston Bruins, Cam Neely, announced today on May 20 that the organization signed General Director Don Sweeney to a two-year contract extension during the 2027-28 season.
“Don sailed for a disappointing period for our club with conviction, objective and clear vision towards the future of Boston Bruins,” said Bruins president Cam Neely. “He has made difficult decisions around the deadline for exchanges with the confidence they pay for dividends while we write a path to contents. He continues to follow this track with a robust and in -depth research of the next club coach, while preparing the NHL plan to come – and excited for victory.
“I am very grateful to Charlie, the whole Jacobs family, and Cam for their confidence and continuous support,” said Bruins Director Don Sweeney. “It is an honor to be part of a franchise with such a legendary story and a passionate fans base. I understand perfectly and adopt the responsibility that accompanies this role. Our fans have high expectations for this team, just like me. The collective goal is to build a team that makes fans of Bruins proud and ends up bringing another Stanley Cup to Boston.”
Sweeney spent 10 seasons as director general of Bruins after being appointed to the position before the 2015-16 season. In 782 games under Sweeney, the Bruins accumulated a record of the regular season of 458-233-91 and obtained births in eliminatory series in eight seasons out of 10. The 1,007 points and 0.644 Boston points are equal for the best of the National Hockey League since his appointment to the role.
He received the Prize from the Director General of the NHL year after the 2018-19 season, during which the team qualified for the Stanley Cup final.
On the international scene, Sweeney was Team Canada Managing Director during the 4 nations confrontation in 2025. Team Canada won the tournament after a 3-2 prolongation victory during the championship match against Team USA at TD Garden in Boston.
Sweeney was also selected to be Deputy Managing Director of Team Canada at the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan, Italy.
