If the song by Bruce Springsteen is true, Joe Depgh was completely the baseball player in his “Glory Days”.
Depugh, who inspired the emblematic song of Springsteen, died after a battle against cancer at 75.
“Just a moment to mark the death of the native of Freehold and balloon Joe Depugh,” published Springsteen on her Instagram. “He was a good friend when I needed it.”
Springsteen and Depughs are both from Freehold, NJ, and played baseball there growing.
While Springsteen finally became the musical superstar, it was Depugh who was “The Star” on the baseball diamond while Springsteen was “the guy at the end of the bench”.
“We used to call him” Saddie “because he almost never played,” said Depugh in the past about Springsteen.
While Springsteen’s song put Depugh’s skills, “he could throw this speedball by you, make you look like a fool.”
“Speedball” was what Springsteen called Depugh’s quick ball.
“I don’t know, guy! Speedball is a term of the 1950s, so it’s just an old term that I heard my grandparents use at different times,” said Springsteen in an interview in 2019. “So, in the context of that,” Glory Days “, I thought it was funny! I suppose!”
The origin of the song came from the moment when the two met in 1973 outside a bar, “Tiveliner”, in Neptune City.
Just as the song said, Springsteen entered and Depugh was released. DEPUGH returned with his old friend, they sat down, took drinks and all that Depugh continued to speak was the days of glory.
“I was tickled Rose, I was even going to go into the song. I was certainly not complaining about what he decided to write,” said Depugh in 2011. “It is a question of living in the past and let go, especially for the jocks, to get out of it and to live in the present. It was certainly not the first time that I am accused of that.”
DEPUGH worked as a substitute teacher before becoming an entrepreneur and finally moved to Florida, where the two natives of full ownership met nearby while Depugh was lived in a condo in Lake Worth and Springsteen has a house in Wellington.
Like his baseball career in his youth, the name of Depugh will live.
“Glory Days my friend,” concluded Springsteen his Instagram tribute.
