Brooks Koepka leaves PGA Championship wondering what could have been after lousy Saturday

Brooks Koepka leaves PGA Championship wondering what could have been after lousy Saturday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Brooks Koepka reflects on what might have happened at the 2024 PGA Championship, without Saturday.

Koepka played three of four rounds at 12 under. But a 3-over 74 on Saturday, which was much uglier until he finished with two birdies, put him out of contention for his sixth major championship.

The LIV golfer finished at 9-under 275 with rounds of 67-68-74-66. He was one of 11 of 16 LIV golfers to qualify.

“(Saturday) I don’t think I did anything good,” Koepka said after his round of six birdies and one bogey on Sunday. “Usually when you play bad, you do one thing you do well. You might play badly. You might drive badly. Yesterday it was a combination of everything.

This is why Koepka was not in a pleasant mood, even after his 66th birthday. When asked to rate his week, he replied: “Not very good. It’s pretty obvious, isn’t it?

And when asked what the difference in his game was between those struggles on Saturday and his recovery on Sunday, he replied: “I don’t know, about eight shots.”

Maybe this will help:

In Strokes Gained: Right off the bat, Koepka went from 66th on Saturday to fourth place by the time he finished on Sunday.

In strokes gained: putting, he finished 68th Saturday at ninth by the time he finished Sunday.

“I feel like I’m playing well,” Koepka said. “(Saturday) was just unfortunate timing, I missed a bunch of putts Friday from within 5 feet. Other than that, I feel like I’d be pretty close to there.

Koepka spoke about his team assigning him “punishment workouts” after a poor performance at the Masters. He described them as a lot more running, very fast, no rest.

“It sucks,” he said.

With the U.S. Open a month away, Koepka expects his team won’t go easy on him between now and his arrival at Pinehurst, even though he moved up in the rankings on Sunday.

And Koepka, who has said he will do whatever his team asks of him, is ready to get to work.
