Brockton man charged with murder after hitting, killing pedestrian

A Brockton man was charged with murder after allegedly hitting a pedestrian with his car twice and then hitting him multiple times with a brick Saturday, according to the Plymouth County prosecutor.

Vasco Semedo, 45, was arrested on North Main Street in Brockton after the crash Saturday morning, officials said. The prosecutor said Semedo was arrested at the scene by passers-by around 9 a.m. before police arrived.

Stuart Smith, 50, was unconscious in the road before being transported to Good Samaritan Hospital. After being airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital, he died there around 10:30 p.m. Saturday evening, officials said.

Brockton police and state troopers investigating the crash said witnesses and surveillance footage showed the alleged attack. Officials said Semedo hit Smith, reversed to hit Smith again, then left his car to hit Smith with a brick multiple times while he was on the ground.

Semedo is expected to be arraigned Monday in Brockton District Court.
