Kevin Federline claims Britney Spears drank while pregnant and took cocaine while breastfeeding in new excerpts from the former dancer’s upcoming memoir, published in several media outlets.
These assertions in You thought you knew (out Oct. 21), particularly regarding Spears’ alleged cocaine use, contradicts the pop star’s own memoir, in which she downplayed speculation about substance use during her partying days. In The woman in meSpears said she “never had a drinking problem” and was not interested in hard drugs, calling ADHD treatment Adderall “the drug of choice.”
But Federline claims in his new book that he began to worry about Spears when she allegedly began drinking alcohol not only while pregnant but also while taking other medications. While he didn’t say what medications Spears was taking, he called mixing it with alcohol “dangerous” and “fucked up, honestly” (via People).
“You’re not supposed to drink when you’re on medication like this,” he wrote. “A few glasses of wine for her would be the equivalent of a whole bottle because of the medication.”
As for Spears’ alleged cocaine use, the book reportedly contains a scene in which Spears shows up to Federline’s 2006 album release party with her brother, father, agent, and an unnamed actress. Federline claims he came across Spears and the actress “sniffing a big line of coke on the table.” While Federline writes that he had seen Spears use coke before, this alleged instance surprised him because Spears was still breastfeeding their young children, Sean and Jayden, at the time.
“What struck me in that moment was everything else, what this meant for the kids,” he wrote (via E!). He continued: “It was really upsetting because of the danger to the children…We could have prepared. She could have pumped milk for Jayden so (Spears’) mother had it prepared. But the way she was that night had nothing to do with us; it was something else entirely.”
Federline says he later told Spears, “Please don’t go home and breastfeed the kids like that. Call your mom or someone. We need to get formula. You can’t do that.” He then writes that Spears looked at him with “instant rage in her eyes. Like she wanted to slap me. Instead, she stood up, took her drink and threw it right in my face. In front of everyone. My family, my best friends, the whole damn table. I was completely white. And she doused me with a cranberry vodka.”
Federline calls it “the beginning of the end” of his relationship with Spears. The couple separated later that year and finalized their divorce in 2007.
A representative for Spears did not immediately return rolling stonerequest for comment regarding Federline’s claims regarding his alcohol and cocaine use. However, Spears and her representatives have already released statements in response to another claim from the book that surfaced earlier this week regarding Spears’ alleged behavior when visiting her children during her conservatorship. (Federline had sole custody of Sean and Jayden for most of this time.)
“They would sometimes wake up in the night to find her standing silently in the doorway, watching them sleep – ‘Oh, are you awake?’ – with a knife in his hand,” Federline wrote. “Then she would turn around and walk away without explanation.”
In a response, a rep for Spears said Federline and others are “taking advantage of (Spears) and unfortunately this comes after child support ended with Kevin.” All she cares about is her children, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and their well-being during this sensationalism. She detailed her journey in her memoirs.
Spears also released a statement on social media, writing: “Believe me, these white lies in this book, they go straight to the bank and I’m the only one who is really hurt here… If you really know me, you won’t pay attention to the tabloids about my mental health and my drinking. I’m actually a pretty intelligent woman who has tried to live a sacred and private life for the last 5 years. I’m speaking out about this because I’m tired of it and that any real woman would do the same. “
