Britney Spears announced that she had lost her baby, posting the news in a statement on her Instagram account on Saturday.
Spears, 40, said last month she was expecting a child with her fiancé Sam Asghari after deciding to take a pregnancy test after finding herself gaining weight. But in a statement on Saturday, she said the couple had lost their “miracle baby”.
“This is a devastating time for any parent,” her statement said. “Perhaps we should have waited to announce that we were further along, but we were too excited to share our good news.”
Her statement went on to say that she and Asghari will continue to try “to grow our beautiful family”, but asked for privacy as they mourned the loss.
Condolences filled the comments section of Spears’ post, where followers expressed their sadness.
Fans expressed their joy that Spears was expecting a child when the news broke, as she revealed a desire to have more children less than a year ago. The singer said she was unable to make her own birth control decisions under conservatorship, which ended in November.
Spears told Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny that she wanted her intrauterine device removed, but her preservatives would not allow it.
“I wanted to take the IUD off so I could start trying to have another baby,” she said in June. “But this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to have it removed because they don’t want me to have any more kids.”
Spears has two teenage sons, Sean and Jayden, with ex-husband Kevin Federline.
