Jaguar Land Rover, the British car manufacturer, said on Saturday that she stopped delivering to the United States in April, a few days after the entry into force of President Trump’s car rates.
The company, which manufactures luxury cars that include jaguars, defenders and Rangers Rovers, does not have manufacturing facilities in the United States and exports all the cars it sells there. In the last three months of 2024, he sent 38,000 cars to the United States. The Trump administration imposed a 25% rate on cars imported Thursday.
“The United States is an important market for JLR luxury brands,” the company said in a statement. “While we are working to resolve new commercial terms with our business partners, we promulgate our short -term actions, including a shipping break in April, while we are developing our medium -term plans.”
The United States is the largest export market to a single country for British cars, with 6.4 billion pounds (8.3 billion dollars) of vehicles sent there in 2023. This represents approximately one-tenth of British British exports.
The automotive prices pose a particular challenge for British car manufacturers, which also include Bentley and Aston Martin, because they sell relatively few vehicles and, therefore, tend to have only a small number of production sites. For them, the implementation of manufacturing in the United States has not been economical, leaving them without easy way to go around the prices.
Jaguar Land Rover sells about a fifth of his cars in the United States. During his fiscal year, which ended in March 2024, he sold around 95,000 cars and said 6.5 billion pounds of income for sales in the United States. If the company was to add the total cost of prices at the cost of its cars, this would add thousands of dollars.
Other British exports to the United States are facing a 10%rate, which Trump announced last week on what he called “Liberation Day”. Until now, the British government has not retaliated and officials have said they focused on the conclusion of a commercial agreement with the United States focused on technology. At the same time, managers consult companies over the next four weeks on a list of American imports that could face British prices in retaliation.
The United States is the second British trading partner, although this trade is easily overshadowed by the flow of goods and services between Great Britain and the European Union. British trade with the United States is strongly biased towards services.
The trade in goods, on which President Trump has concentrated, is relatively in balance. In 2023, Great Britain imported approximately 58 billion pounds sterling of goods and exported around 60 billion pounds sterling, according to the British Office for National Statistics.
The shares of Tata Motors, the Indian parent company of Jaguar Land Rover, fell by more than 9% last week and have been negotiated at the lowest level since mid-2023.
