New Delhi: In his first public address as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak pledged to turn the country’s financial situation around and build “an economy that makes the most of the opportunities of Brexit”.

Standing outside 10 Downing Street in London, after being appointed prime minister by King Charles III, Sunak spoke of the “lofty” aims of his predecessor Liz Truss, but said some “mistakes” had been made.

“Right now our country is facing a deep economic crisis, the aftermath of Covid lingers, Putin’s war in Ukraine has destabilized energy markets and supply chains around the world,” he said. he declares.

However, he said he wanted to “pay tribute” to Truss, whose tenure at the helm only lasted seven weeks.

His tax-cutting budget sparked economic and political turmoil.

β€œShe was not wrong to want to improve the growth of this country. It’s a noble goal and I admired his hustle and bustle to create change, but some mistakes were made, not due to bad will or bad intentions, but mistakes nonetheless,” he said.

Truss resigned last week after his debt-funded tax cuts budget sent shockwaves through the markets, sending the pound plummeting.

β€œI stand here before you ready to lead our country into the future, to put your needs above politics, to reach out and build a government that represents the best traditions of my party. Together we can achieve amazing things,” he added.

Sunak became India’s first prime minister of Indian descent as well as the first Hindu prime minister after winning the ruling Conservative Party leadership race on Monday.
