Brighton are ‘bankrolled by Todd Boehly’ as Chelsea held responsible for record profit in hilarious rant

Brighton learned Todd Boehly was responsible for their record profits last year in a hilarious rant live on talkSPORT.

talkSPORT’s Andy Jacobs, a huge Chelsea fan, is angry at his club’s reckless plan to hand all their money to Brighton as he sat alongside Paul Hawksbee on the Hawksbee and Jacobs Show.

Since Boehly bought Chelsea in May 2022, he has given Brighton more than £200 million, of which £115 million is earmarked for the acquisition of Moises Caicedo.

He said on Wednesday afternoon: “Never has a club helped another club so much in the history of football. It’s absolutely crazy what they’ve done to Chelsea.

“It doesn’t make any sense. It’s not Brighton’s fault, they’re laughing.”

To make matters even more complicated, Moises Caicedo and Robert Sanchez’s colossal fees were not added to Brighton’s record-breaking annual financial figures when they arrived at Stamford Bridge after the deadline. June 30th.

That means Chelsea’s coffers are still being drained by Brighton and next year’s reports at the Amex Stadium could look even rosier thanks to the Blues.

Jacobs continued his incredible rant by saying: “£87 million came from Chelsea and that was before Caicedo and Sanchez. Caicedo was huge, £65 million too much without a doubt.

“And Sanchez… I mean, who pays £25 million for a third goalkeeper? They must be crazy, Chelsea.

“Caicedo is a good player but he’s not a £115m player. No defensive midfielder is worth that kind of money. It’s just not the case.

“I don’t blame Brighton. I blame Clearlake Capital. I wish Clearlake Capital would buy Brighton and ruin their club instead of our club.”

In their preview of Brighton’s game against Brentford, Jacobs stepped in and said: “Come on Brentford.

Hawksbee couldn’t believe his ears and asked why, to which his talkSPORT partner replied: “They’re so smug! They love what they’ve done.

Hawksbee replied, “Well, why wouldn’t they?” I mean the project was financed by a very rich man…

“Yeah, Todd Boehly,” Jacobs said.

“I can’t beat that,” Hawksbee relented. “I’ll leave it at that. Their fairy godfather, Todd Boehly.”

Brighton made history on Tuesday by revealing they had broken the record for the biggest profit made by an English club in a year.

In the 2022/23 season, the Seagulls recorded an after-tax profit of £122.8 million after a stormy campaign which saw them reach Europe for the first time in their history.

But Chelsea helped them financially in the transfer market, signing Marc Cucurella for £62 million, as well as paying a huge sum of compensation to manager Graham Potter and his backroom team.

With Caicedo and Sanchez also signing for the London side from the south coast, the total amount Chelsea have spent on Brighton players in their recent history is £202million.

And that doesn’t include Potter’s recruitment fee, which cost a world record for a manager when he replaced Thomas Tuchel in September 2022 – estimated at £16m, then £5.5m extra for its behind-the-scenes staff.

This takes the total number even higher to £223.5 million – with Chelsea currently 12th in the Premier League while Brighton are ninth.
