“Those who show no compassion for human life will face serious consequences,” District Attorney George Gascón said in a press release. “Brianna Kupfer’s murder has devastated Los Angeles County and my office is contacting her family to provide any services she may need.”

Pasadena police arrested Shawn Laval Smith, 31, late Wednesday morning in a commercial district known as Old Town and then released him into the custody of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). He is being held on $2 million bail, according to inmate records.

CNN was not immediately able to find information about Smith’s attorney, who was due for arraignment later Friday. He is charged with one count of murder and a special allegation that he used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife.

Kupfer, 24, was stabbed on January 13 while working at a furniture store in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Her attacker fled into the store’s back alley, the LAPD said Tuesday.

Officials had offered a $250,000 reward in the case.

Just after 1:30 p.m., Kupfer texted a friend saying someone there was “giving him a bad vibe,” LAPD Lt. John Radtke said at a press conference. The person who received the text did not see it immediately, he said.

A customer walked into the store about 15 minutes later and found Kupfer “on the floor, lifeless, covered in blood,” Radtke said.

The assailant was not known to the victim and showed up randomly in the store, the LAPD said. Police did not release the name of the store, but said it was located in the 300 block of North La Brea Avenue.

Kupfer, of Pacific Palisades, was enrolled in extension classes at UCLA, the university said.

The seemingly random and senseless killing of Kupfer “has deeply shaken and shocked our community,” said city council member Paul Koretz.
