Brentford have launched an internal investigation into their injury problems after suffering 29 knocks this season.

Long-term injuries have left Brentford without stars such as Rico Henry, Josh Dasilva, Ben Mee and Aaron Hickey.

The Bees have moved closer to the relegation places than they would like, sitting just four points off the bottom three after a nine-game winless run.

Many clubs have been hit hard by injury crises this year and, although Brentford have not had the highest number of absences, the range of long-term problems is unusual.

As a result, they have started a study – like Manchester United – into why so many injuries have occurred and how they can reduce recovery times, Thomas Frank has revealed.

“Of course it’s serious, we had too many injuries,” he said.

“We’re doing a thorough review of the type of injuries we had and how quickly they (injured players) came back to be able to play. That’s what we’re looking at in all departments: the coaching staff , sports science, the performance department and the medical department. Everything is linked.

“The main thing is that we were unlucky. A lot of contact injuries, a lot of serious injuries like ACLs that it’s hard to do anything about. But we always think about what we can do to improve everything and how to avoid this.

“Contact injuries are difficult (to avoid), but how can we get better at getting players back faster? It has just been reported. Because we’ve had so many, is there anything we can do? This is what we study.

Brentford face Sheffield United today at 3pm in what could be a crucial match in their bid to stay in the Premier League.

They finished ninth last season and while they should have enough to avoid the drop, there have been concerns about their inability to secure victory.

A 2-1 defeat at Burnley last month was a disappointing end to a game they should have gotten more from.
