Brandywine Realty Trust claims data stolen in ransomware attack

American real estate trust giant Brandywine Realty Trust has confirmed a cyberattack that resulted in the theft of data on its network.

In a Tuesday filing with regulators, Philadelphia-based Brandywine described the cybersecurity incident as unauthorized access and “deployment of encryption” to its internal corporate computer systems, consistent with a hacker attack. ransomware.

Brandywine said the cyberattack disrupted the company’s business applications that support its operations and business functions, including its financial information systems.

The company said it has shut down some of its systems and believes it has brought the activity under control. The company confirmed that hackers had taken files from its systems, but it was still investigating whether any sensitive or personal information had been taken.

Brandywine is one of the largest real estate trusts (REITs) in the United States, with a portfolio of approximately 70 properties in Austin, Philadelphia and Washington DC according to its last earnings report in April.

Some of the company’s biggest tenants would be IBM, Spark Therapeutics and Comcast.

Since new rules were introduced in December, publicly traded U.S. companies are required to disclose to investors cybersecurity events that could have a significant impact on the business. At the time of filing, Brandywine said it did not believe the incident was “reasonably likely to have a material impact” on its operations.
