Brad Holmes on Jared Goff: I don’t foresee any decline without Ben Johnson

Lions quarterback Jared Goff was named an MVP finalist on Thursday and it shows how much he thrived with Ben Johnson calling the offensive plays in Detroit.

Johnson’s tenure as the Lions’ offensive coordinator ended when he was hired as the Bears’ head coach this week, but Lions general manager Brad Holmes isn’t worried Goff’s streak of success will reach also the finish line. Holmes said during a news conference Thursday that Goff has continued to improve throughout his time in Detroit and that he has “faith” that head coach Dan Campbell’s plans for him future will ensure that this remains the case.

“Obviously he was very productive with Ben as coordinator, but he had lots of previous success before we even got here to a completely different system,” Holmes said. “I think he’s a better quarterback, a more mature quarterback now than he was then when he had his first success. I don’t foresee this. I think this guy is in his prime. He gets better and better every year. And when I say prime, I think just get in there because it keeps going up.

The Lions have already lost three key assistants from Campbell’s staff and other coaches could leave this offseason as well, making Goff’s performance one of many things to watch while trying to determine if the team will be in able to stay the course.
