Boston’s Most Expensive Home Costs $29.9 Million: Historic Mansion Has a Cobalt Blue Room, Zebra-Print Carpet, Rainbow Staircase, and Skull Decor

Boston’s most expensive single-family home has hit the market for $29.9 million, accompanied by some bold design choices.

The 19th-century mansion built in 1882 is located in the Back Bay neighborhood along Commonwealth Avenue.

It’s full of bold design decisions, a cobalt-colored living room, a chessboard-flavored hallway, and plenty of skeletons, not in the closet, but in the shower.

Priced for the most expensive single-family home for sale in Boston, with more than 10,000 square feet of space including six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, spread over five floors.

The current owner, venture capitalist Kevin Starr, is now selling the house after his family moved to the Boston suburbs.

Most floors in the house, if not carpeted, or painted with a glossy black paint, make four striking highlights.

The skeletons are not only in the shower, but also running along one of the hallways in the house and can be seen on the artwork on the walls, including on the wallpaper, which also highlights the owner’s fascination with skulls.

The lighting in the house is equally original with black chandeliers hanging from the high ceilings in the kitchen and hallway.

A cozy living room is decorated with black varnished wooden walls and intricate wooden carvings and moldings, above one of the house’s five fireplaces which seem to give it a Gothic atmosphere.

“Behind the wrought iron gates of Commonwealth Ave, this majestic 19th century limestone mansion spans over 10,000 square feet, artfully transformed to emulate the ambiance of an elegant boutique hotel,” details the announcement.

“The interior design skillfully merges classic architectural details such as ornate moldings, intricate woodwork, cathedral ceilings, five fireplaces with bold modern touches.

“A limestone façade invites you into a sumptuous living room level, featuring a grand reception hall, a library adorned with black oak paneling, and a temperature-controlled wine cellar,” the listing continues.
