Borussia Dortmund scored from the penalty spot and had it overturned after a VAR review in a bizarre incident against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Edin Terzic’s men led 2-1 at Borussia-Park as they attempted to return to winning ways after back-to-back defeats and keep pace with RB Leipzig in the Champions League race.

They had the chance to take a two-goal lead minutes after the break when they were awarded a penalty as Jonas Omlin was deemed to have brought down Karim Adeyemi.

Marcel Sabitzer stepped up and converted but the referee blew the whistle almost immediately for a VAR review.

The penalty was ultimately overturned because Omlin recovered the ball fairly.

Marcel Sabitzer scored from the penalty spot to give Borussia Dortmund a 3-1 lead on Saturday.

But his penalty was canceled in absurd circumstances following a VAR check.

Dortmund maintained their 2-1 lead to remain fifth and level on points with fourth-placed Leipzig.

The Bundesliga giants take a 2-0 lead on 28 minutes through Sabitzer, with his second goal coming from the penalty spot.

Maximilian Wober halved Mönchengladbach’s deficit in the 36th minute, but that ultimately proved to be little more than a consolation.

Dortmund fell to 10 after 55 minutes when Adeyemi saw red for a second bookable offence, but the visitors were unable to take advantage.

They will return to action on Tuesday for the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Atletico, who they lead 2-1.
