Bolton vs Oxford preview

Bolton survived a scare in their League One play-off semi-final win over Barnsley last weekend to book a place at Wembley, where they now find themselves just 90 minutes away from securing promotion to the championship before next season.

Ian Evatt’s side beat the Yorkshire side 5-4 on aggregate, which proved to be a closer tie than many expected after the Trotters won the first leg 3-1 at Oakwell .

Barnsley scored twice in the final half hour at Bolton last Tuesday night, going a goal closer to force the tie into extra time, but the Manchester side held on to book their place at Wembley.

Bolton began their play-off campaign as favorites to join Portsmouth and Derby for promotion from League One this season after finishing third in the table, 10 points clear of the opponents they face on Saturday afternoon.

The Evatts travel to the capital having lost just one of their last nine matches, in last weekend’s semi-final, and currently find themselves among the favorites for promotion this weekend.

Promotion would ensure Bolton’s first return to the second tier since relegation in 2019, from which they suffered consecutive relegations to League Two before returning and are now aiming for a return to the second tier after three seasons in League One.

Oxford head into the Wembley final as underdogs for victory, but have already upset the odds by reaching Saturday’s match, beating a Peterborough side who finished above them in the table and were returned for the 2-1 victory on aggregate in both legs.

Des Buckingham’s side finished the season fifth in third place and head into the weekend in good form having lost just one of their last 10 matches.

The United States will aim for the first time this century to reach the second tier of the football pyramid after being relegated from Division 1, as it was known at the time, in 1999, when they have since dropped out the Football League. and are now only 90 minutes away from a second-tier comeback.

The Oxfordshire side head into their battle with Bolton having won just one of their last eight matches against the Trotters, including a 5-0 defeat the last time the two sides met, at Toughsheet Community Stadium in March.
