Boeing 737 crash on takeoff in Senegal leaves 11 injured

A Boeing 737 skidded off the runway as it took off from an airport in Senegal, the country’s transport minister said Thursday, causing several injuries.

The Minister of Transport, El Malick Ndiaye said Ten people were injured when the Air Senegal flight operated by TransAir left the tarmac at Blaise Diagne International Airport, which serves the capital Dakar. According to local media, citing airport press releases, 11 people were injured, four of them seriously.

Intense video footage shared on Facebook by Malian musician Cheick Siriman Sissoko, purporting to show the aftermath of the crash, shows a panicked scene in which people evacuate the plane, which he says also “caught fire.” Screams can be heard while flames are visible on one side of the plane.

Ndiaye said the incident occurred at 1:14 a.m. following a “stopped acceleration” during takeoff. He said the plane was carrying 79 passengers, four cabin crew and two pilots, one of whom was among the injured. The injured were taken to hospital for treatment while the rest of the passengers were taken to a hotel.

The minister also ordered an investigation into the causes of the incident and apologized to airport passengers whose flights were delayed as a result.

Separately, on Thursday, another Boeing 737 encountered a problem while landing at Gazipaşa-Alanya airport in Turkey, the local agency said. Hurriyet newspaper reports. According to According to Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, Turkish Minister of Transport, the front landing gear of the plane belonging to Corendon Airline was “broken”, causing one of the plane’s tires to burst and damaging a strut at the ‘front of the plane.

Incredibly, this is the second accident involving a Boeing plane in Türkiye in as many days. Video of the plane’s landing showed sparks flying from the plane as it scraped the runway, although fortunately no one was injured.
