Body of missing Tampa mother reportedly found

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Tampa Police Department (TPD) said they located a body believed to belong to Sylvia Pagan, who was reported missing Sunday evening.

Police said the identification of the body, which was found in the Wimauma area, is awaiting confirmation from the medical examiner’s office, which will also confirm the cause of death.

Jovanni Caceres Steffani, 38, who allegedly committed suicide, was the only person of interest in the case and no other subjects appear to be involved, according to investigators.

“This is not the outcome anyone wanted,” Chief Lee Bercaw said. “We send our condolences to Sylva’s loved ones, but especially to her daughter Briana during this unimaginable loss.”

The Tampa-based nonprofit “We Are The Essentials” said in a Facebook post that it found the remains believed to belong to Pagan.

“Even though we think it’s probably Sylvia, we should all wait for the medical examiner’s official identification,” we can read on Facebook. “This is an understandably tragic development. We pray that our work in this case will help Sylvia’s family. There are few feelings worse than the desperate anguish of not knowing. We are deeply saddened by this outcome and join you all in keeping Sylvia’s family in your prayers.

The case is still ongoing.
