Police are investigating after human remains were found in a suitcase on Long Island Tuesday.
Officers responded to a 911 call Tuesday morning reporting “suspicious activity” in a wooded area near an apartment building in Huntington Station, New York, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
“Upon arrival, officers found a deceased person in a suitcase next to the building,” police said in a statement.
The identity of the victim and the cause of death are not yet known.
The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy, police said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
A resident of the apartment complex told New York’s ABC station WABC that she heard a woman screaming around 3 a.m. Sunday.
Another person living in the area said he saw police respond to the scene.
“The police came to get it and saw it was a body,” the man said. “The smell was rancid. Strong.”
