Black bear kebabs give family parasitic worms, 3 people hospitalized
UNDATED (CNN Newsource/WFMY/KCRA/KCAL/KCBS/WKRC) – Infected black bear meat left several members of a family sick with parasitic worms, and three of them were hospitalized.
The incident occurred in 2022, but is now being detailed for the first time by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

An unnamed family was in South Dakota for a reunion when they consumed the meat. The meat was originally harvested in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan and frozen for 45 days before being thawed.
The World Organization for Animal Health has stated that freezing meat can kill some parasites commonly found in black bears, but there are still some freeze-tolerant parasite species.
After consuming the meat, six of the eight people who ate it developed symptoms suggestive of parasitic roundworm infection. Three of these six people had to be hospitalized. Infections can range from mild to severe. Symptoms can range from severe muscle pain and fever to life-threatening problems such as heart problems and difficulty breathing.
Since then, all members of the family have recovered from the infections. Many wildlife experts have said all bear meat should be considered infected.

According to the CDC, it is important that game meat, especially wild game harvested in northern latitudes, be cooked thoroughly.
