BJP sitting MP Shantanu Thakur to take on Trinamool Congress’ Biswajit Das

Bangaon (SC) Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 42 parliamentary seats in West Bengal, currently held by the BJP. The seat was created in 2009 and is a reserved constituency for Scheduled Castes, with a literacy rate of 73.54%.

Slated for May 20 elections, Bangaon constituency comprises seven assembly segments: Kalyani, Haringhata, Bagdah, Bongaon Uttar, Bongaon Dakshin, Gaighata and Swarupnagar.

In 2009, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won the seat, followed by another victory in 2014 when Kapil Krishna Thakur won the seat from Mamata Banerjee’s party.

However, after his death soon after, a by-election was held and AITC’s Mamata Thakur won the seat.

The situation reversed in 2019 when Shantanu Thakur of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious.

Voting date

West Bengal is expected to vote in all seven phases. The Bangaon seat will go to polls on May 20 in the fifth phase of elections. Votes will be counted on June 4.
