BJP replaces Jayant Sinha with Manish Jaiswal, Congress introduces JP Bhai Patel
Former Union Minister Jayant Sinha, a two-time MP from Hazaribagh, earlier expressed his desire not to contest the 2024 general elections to focus on “fighting climate change” in India and the world.
Before Jayant Sinha, this seat was held by his father and former Union minister Yashwant Sinha.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) this time replaced Jayant Sinha with Hazaribagh Sadar MP Manish Jaiswal. Interestingly, Jaiswal is pitted against Jai Prakash Bhai Patel, a sitting MP from Mandu, who left the saffron party and joined the Congress in March this year.
Moreover, the BJP suffered another setback when the Jharkhand Congress unit on Tuesday announced that Jayant Sinha’s son and grandson of Yashwant Sinha, Aashir Sinha, had joined the grand old party.
This will be the first time since 1998 that no member of Yashwant Sinha’s family is contesting elections from Hazaribagh Lok Sabha seat.
The parliamentary constituency comprises five Assembly segments, two of which were won by the BJP in the last state elections, while its NDA ally AJSU won another seat. The Congress won the remaining two seats.
The political landscape of Hazaribagh has seen many twists and turns in recent months and it remains a crucial seat for the 2024 elections.
Voting date
Polling for the 2024 general elections in Jharkhand is being held in four phases. While four seats were voted on May 13, voting in the remaining constituencies will take place on May 20, May 25 and June 1.
In Hazaribagh, people will vote on May 20. In the 2019 elections, the seat recorded a total turnout of 64.85%.
