BJP-led NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu files nomination with PM Modi as first nominator

Draupadi Murmu, the BJP-led NDA’s pick for the presidency, filed his candidacy papers on Friday in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP leader JP Nadda, among others.

Union cabinet ministers, chief ministers of the BJP and NDA led states were also present at the parliament building where Murmu filed his candidacy for the July 18 presidential election.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi put forward his name for the nomination, which was seconded by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. The second group of nominators were top ministers from the BJP-led states, the third were MPs and MPs from Himachal and Haryana, and the fourth group were MPs and MPs from Gujarat.

Besides the prime minister, senior Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and JP Nadda were the signatories of the nomination papers submitted by Murmu today.

Apart from the complement of NDA leaders, Vijaysai Reddy of the YSR Congress and BJD leader Sasmit Patra, who are not part of the alliance, were also in parliament to support his nomination. AIADMK leader O Paneerselvam and JD-U’s Rajiv Ranjan Singh were also present.

Before filing his papers, Murmu paid floral tributes to statues of Mahatma Gandhi, BR Ambedkar and Birsa Munda.

Each Presidential Nomination Set must have 50 nominators and 50 seconders from among the elected representatives.

If elected, Murmu will be the first tribal president and the second woman to hold the position.

Murmu was declared the presidential candidate of the BJP-led NDA earlier this week. She also previously served as Governor of Jharkhand and a government post in Odisha.

Murmu is Odisha’s first presidential candidate from a major political party or alliance. She continues to break down barriers and was the first female governor of Jharkhand. She served as Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021.
Born into a poor tribal family from a village in Mayurbhanj, a backward district of Odisha, Murmu completed her education and taught at the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre, Rairangpur.

She pursued BA studies at Ramadevi Women’s College Bhubaneswar, Murmu started her political career as Vice President of Rairangpur NAC.

In 2007, the Odisha assembly awarded Murmu the “Nilakantha Award” for best MP. She held several organizational positions in the BJP and served as Vice President of ST Morcha State in 1997.

Draupadi Murmu was a member of the National Executive of BJP’s ST Morcha from 2013 to 2015 and served as BJP’s Mayurbhanj (West) District Chief in 2010 and 2013.

Between 2006 and 2009, she was the leader of BJP’s ST Morcha in Odisha. She was a national executive member of BJP ST Morcha from 2002 to 2009.
