Bizarre moment prolific one-sock burglar is filmed targeting homes – before being jailed for three years

THIS is the bizarre moment a prolific burglar was filmed wearing a Nike sock and sliders, before fleeing on a stolen mountain bike during a night out.

Sean Maher, 38, targeted nine different homes and a car in Bretton, Cambridgeshire, between Saturday August 12 and Sunday August 13 last year.

He failed to gain access to seven of the properties after finding their doors were locked – and only made it as far as the front door of one house, before hearing the owners and escape.

Ring doorbell footage shows Maher approaching homes and trying door handles before running away.

Maher tried the door of a house in nearby Greenham which was unlocked and the occupant woke the next morning to find the house had been ransacked.

He had left the lights on, the drawers open, and the front and back doors of the house wide open.

He had fled wearing a Nike sock and slider and riding a mountain bike he had stolen from the home, along with keys, drugs, a video doorbell and e-liquids.

Five incidents were reported to police, but following a public appeal for information, four more victims came forward after checking doorbell video footage and CCTV systems.

After reviewing the footage, officers from the Acquisitive Crime Team identified Maher and arrested him in Spalding, Cambridgeshire, on August 16.

“He went door to door around Bretton one night trying to rob people’s houses, and unfortunately succeeded in two of his attempts.

“This was captured on video doorbell cameras and CCTV from multiple addresses, which proved critical in our investigation to identify and ultimately convict Maher.”
