Birthday Special: When Amitabh Bachchan drove five hours to attend Jaya Bachchan’s graduation and she was touched by the gesture! | Hindi Cinema News
Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan were married on June 3, 1973. They have been together for 51 years today as the couple celebrates their anniversary. The duo shared screen space in several films like ‘Chupke Chupke’, ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Abhimaan’ among others. But did you know that Bachchan was also going to star in Jaya’s film ‘Guddi’ and she was secretly very happy about it, however, Big B was removed from the film due to the fact that he had become popular.
In the book titled ‘To Be or Not to Be: Amitabh Bachchan’, Jaya Bachchan had revealed, “When I heard that Amitabh Bachchan would be the hero in Guddi, I was secretly happy. It was different and would be perfect for a movie. which did not deal with the usual hero-heroine romantic subject. But Hrishikesh Mukherjee wanted someone who was not very famous and Bachchan had become very popular after the release of ‘Anand’.
In the same book, the actress revealed the gesture of Big B which touched her the most. She said: “I was extremely touched when he drove five hours to the Institute to attend the graduation ceremony on my graduation day from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). Amitabh used to gift me expensive and heavy Kanjeevaram sarees. most of the saris were white with a purple border, a purple color that doesn’t suit me.”
Interestingly, Jaya Bachchan had worn some of these sarees in ‘Abhimaan’. The couple got married after the success of ‘Zanjeer’. Some time ago, Big B had revealed this in his caption on their anniversary and said, “47 years.. today.. June 3, 1973..!! We had decided that if Zanjeer makes it, we would go with some friends to London for the first time.. My father asked who are you going with when I told him who, he said you have to marry him before you go.. otherwise you are not going? .. So.. I obeyed..!!”
After their marriage, the couple became parents to Shweta Bachchan in 1974 and Abhishek Bachchan in 1976.
